Event Information
Human trafficking is often perceived as a distant issue, something that happens somewhere else. The reality is far more sobering. Trafficking can and does occur in small towns and suburban communities, including here in Loudoun County.
The Loudoun Coalition on Women and Girls (LCWAG) invites the community to Human Trafficking: Yes, It’s in Our Backyard Too, an educational and awareness-focused event designed to inform, engage, and empower. This important program will bring together local experts, support organizations, and a survivor speaker to share the realities of human trafficking in our region.
The evening will feature a moderated panel addressing current statistics, common warning signs, prevention and intervention strategies, and local resources that provide pathways to safety and support. Attendees will also hear from a courageous survivor who will share her personal story, offering powerful insight into both the impact of trafficking and the importance of community awareness.
Panelists include:
- Lisa Jones, founder of Silence No More, a survivor-led organization focused on long-term recovery, safety, and community accountability. She brings more than 30 years of experience supporting survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking.
- Detective Joseph Dupras, Special Victims Unit, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, with more than nine years of experience investigating sex crimes, abuse cases, missing juveniles, online exploitation, and human trafficking. He holds a B.A. in International Relations and Strategic Intelligence from Liberty University.
- Marilia Tellez Nava, a Loudoun County human services professional with 14 years of public sector experience specializing in juvenile justice, youth trafficking prevention, and gang intervention. She is a Certified Human Trafficking Prevention Specialist, Certified Virginia Gang Specialist, and member of the County’s Youth Trafficking Response & Advocacy Network.
- Deepa Patel, a licensed mental health professional and co-founder of Trauma and Hope, which provides therapy for individuals impacted by trauma and training for professionals who work with victims of sexual exploitation, including government agencies.
- Arial Ward, Director of the Inova Ewing Forensic Assessment and Consultation Team and a forensic nurse of 11 years, with extensive experience supporting patients impacted by sexual and domestic violence, strangulation, and human trafficking. She serves regional anti-trafficking initiatives across Northern Virginia.
Moderator
Dr. Suzanne Nizon will moderate the event, an LCWAG Board member and licensed professional counselor and marriage and family therapist with nearly 35 years of experience.
The goal of this event is to increase awareness, deepen understanding, and strengthen our community’s ability to recognize and respond to human trafficking with knowledge, compassion, and action. When communities are informed, they are better equipped to protect, prevent, and support.
